Nachhaltigkeit, was bedeutet das eigentlich?
Während wir im Alltagssprachgebrauch den Begriff u. a. mit Langlebigkeit und Umweltschutz verbinden, bezieht sich „nachhaltige Entwicklung“ auf den verantwortungsbewussten Umgang mit den endlichen Ressourcen unserer Erde.
„Nachhaltigkeit“ gibt es schon seit über 300 Jahren
„Nachhaltigkeit“ ist kein neues Konzept. Nach übereinstimmenden Angaben unterschiedlicher Quellen geht der Begriff „Nachhaltigkeit“ auf den Deutschen Freiberger Oberberghauptmann Hans Carl von Carlowitz (1645–1714) zurück, der ihn in seinem Buch von 1713 auf die Forstwirtschaft übertrug. Das Ziel war die Schaffung eines stabilen Gleichgewichts.
Der Grundgedanke: In einem Wald sollten nur so viele Bäume abgeholzt werden, wie in diesem Wald in absehbarer Zeit nachwachsen können. Dadurch sollte langfristig der Bestand des Waldes sichergestellt werden, welcher die Basis der der Forstwirtschaft bildet.

Sustainability, what does it actually mean?
While in everyday language we associate the term with longevity and environmental protection, among other things, “sustainable development” refers to the responsible use of our earth’s finite resources.
“Sustainability” has been around for over 300 years.
“Sustainability” is not a new concept. According to consistent accounts from various sources, the term “sustainability” dates back to Hans Carl von Carlowitz (1645-1714), a German chief miner from Freiberg, who applied it to forestry in his 1713 book. The aim was to create a stable equilibrium.
The basic idea was that only as many trees should be cut down in a forest as could grow back in that forest in the foreseeable future. This was to ensure the long-term existence of the forest, which forms the basis of forestry.

Die Kampagne / The Campaign
So besinnlich und traditionell Weihnachten auch erscheint, ist es leider auch eine Zeit enormen Konsums. Seien es Unmengen an Geschenken, viele Reisen oder Essen und Trinken im Übermaß: Nachhaltigkeit sieht auf jeden Fall anders aus. Natürlich möchten wir dies nicht verurteilen, denn wohl jeder hat seine Freude an der Weihnachtszeit und den genannten Punkten. Aber wir möchten einen – wenn auch winzigen – Beitrag zur Nachhaltigkeit und zum Umweltschutz leisten. Und zwar mit unserem diesjährigen Weihnachtspaket, welches eine kleine Fichte und passende Deko enthält. Diese sollt ihr gerne schmücken und über Weihnachten bewundern. Doch passt bitte auf sie auf, denn im neuen Jahr, soll sie von euch an einem von euch ausgewählten Ort eingepflanzt werden. Dort wird sie für hoffentlich viele Jahre CO2 binden und damit einen kleinen Beitrag zum Umweltschutz leisten. Bitte haltet den Moment der Einpflanzung bildlich fest, denn wir wollen eine große Collage in der Cloud erstellen. Wir hoffen, euch gefällt diese Idee und dass ihr euch damit identifizieren könnt.

As contemplative and traditional as Christmas may seem, it is unfortunately also a time of enormous consumption. Whether it’s a huge amount of gifts, a lot of travel or food and drink in excess: sustainability looks different in any case. Of course, we do not want to condemn this, because probably everyone has his joy in the Christmas season and the points mentioned. But we would like to make a contribution – albeit a tiny one – to sustainability and environmental protection. And that is with our Christmas package this year, which contains a small spruce and matching decorations. You are welcome to decorate it and admire it over Christmas. But please take care of it, because in the new year, it should be planted by you at a place of your choice. There it will hopefully bind CO2 for many years and thus make a small contribution to environmental protection. Please capture the moment of the planting, because we want to create a big collage in the cloud. We hope you like this idea and that you can identify with it.

Die Bedeutung der Bäume für unsere Umwelt /
The importance of trees for our environment
Seit Beginn der menschlichen Zivilisation haben wir schon fast die Hälfte des einstigen Baumbestands auf unserer Erde abgeholzt. Das klingt nicht nur dramatisch, sondern ist vor allem schlecht für unser Klima. Bäume filtern das Treibhausgas Kohlendioxid aus der Atmosphäre. Durch Photosynthese wandeln sie es in lebensnotwendigen Sauerstoff um und halten die Luft rein. Die nachhaltige Aufforstung unserer Wälder ist also existenziell, um unser Klima zu schützen.
Neben der wichtigen Funktion der Bäume für unser Klima begleitet vor allem die Holznutzung die Entwicklung der Menschheit. Holz kommt als Energieträger zum Einsatz und ist ein vielseitiger Bau- und Werkstoff, dessen produzierte Menge die von Stahl, Aluminium und Beton weit übersteigt. Es zählt deshalb zu einem der wichtigsten Rohstoffe für unsere Wirtschaft.
Nicht zuletzt dient der Wald heimischen Wildtieren als Lebensraum und den Menschen als beliebtes Erholungs- und Freizeitziel – besonders in den aktuellen Zeiten ein wahrer Zufluchtsort.

Since the beginning of human civilization, we have already deforested almost half of the former tree population on our planet. This not only sounds dramatic, but is above all bad for our climate. Trees filter the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Through photosynthesis, they convert it into vital oxygen and keep the air clean. Sustainable reforestation of our forests is therefore essential to protect our climate.
In addition to the important function of trees for our climate, it is above all the use of wood that accompanies the development of mankind. Wood is used as an energy source and is a versatile construction and material whose produced quantity far exceeds that of steel, aluminum and concrete. It is therefore one of the most important raw materials for our economy.
Last but not least, the forest serves as a habitat for native wildlife and as a popular recreational and leisure destination for people – a true refuge, especially in the current times.
